simone

simone came to our cell group tonight. simone is a sober alcoholic - for almost 5 years - who has been coming to our church for almost 2 years now. every year our church does gift wrapping at forest hill and simone started coming to our church because she met ruth at gift wrapping when ruth wrapped a present for her. simone shared with us very honestly about her experience of being an alcoholic for 12 years. there was a lot to learn from the things she had to say. we all understood a bit more of what alcoholics go through. she talked about THIQ - which pretty much all alcoholics have - it's a bit in the brain that means they are allergic to alcohol, which means when they start drinking they literally can't stop. in melbourne city and suburbs there are about 30 AA meetings everyday. anyway, i just really apreciated her coming to speak to us tonight and wanted to share that with you. i am glad that God has given us all a hope and a future. i also thought about the fact that God can speak through anyone. last week at church i heard world class speakers and i learnt lots, and tonight i heard a sober alcoholic share openly and honestly and i learnt from her too. all God needs is someone willing.

You refer to Simone as a Sober Alcoholic. It made me stop and think. Is this how she refers to herself? I wonder how long does it take for a person to be sober and 'off the bottle' before they can stop being referred to using the word alcoholic?
Not trying to bring you down, just a thought i had.

A comment on the comment -- many treatment programs (most?) begin with the recognition of the disease -- "I'm an alcoholic". They continue to call themselves alcoholic even after many years of sobriety in recognition of how fragile and even predisposed they are to drink. A good reminder if you will, as well a good description of the physical and mental temptation that alcohol remains.

to my anonymous friend, i referred to simone as a sober alcoholic as this is what she calls herself. she mentioned that at one of her aa meetings the other week, they heard of two members who began drinking again, one had been sober for only 1-2 years, the other had been sober for 16 years. thanks for sharing your thoughts and to my fav bro in law for joining in too!!!

Hey Fi, there's LOTS of us reading!!! I guess my thought on the subject was pretty much what Hil said . . . . and BTW, those "international speakers" you heard were just ORDINARY OLD PEPOLE just the same as your friend Simone. OF COURSE God can use anyone!!! He does it ALL the time.

Love
Wendy
